Taiguini Books, a division of the University of Guam Press, is seeking fiction, historical fiction, and creative non-fiction novels that uncover key aspects of CHamoru history, culture, narratives, and epistemologies. The novels will be considered for publishing as part of a new Mariquita Novel Series.
The novel series is named in honor of Mariquita, a woman whose personal story — from before the war through the Japanese occupation to her tragic death — sheds lights on the CHamoru experience during World War II. Her story was documented in 1982 by her son, Chris Perez Howard, in the iconic novel “Mariquita.”
Recognizing that novelists in our community may be at various stages of the writing process, UOG Press will be hosting an informational workshop at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at the University of Guam Micronesian Area Research Center in the second-floor conference room. The workshop will assess the distinct needs of interested writers and establish networks to assist in the novel-writing process. All interested writers are welcome to attend.
UOG Press last month released a fresh edition of the book, titled “Mariquita – Revisited.” In honor of Mariquita and her powerful story, Taiguini Books will dedicate all proceeds made on the sale of this novel to the publishing of the Mariquita Novel Series. The book may be purchased at https://www.uog.edu/uogpress/publications/.
