UOG Men's Soccer clinches Amateur League Championship with one game remaining
The University of Guam Men's Soccer Team won 7-2 over FC Beercelona on April 5 at the GFA National Training Center, securing its victory of the Guam Football Association Budweiser Amateur Men's League Championship with one game still to play in the season.
The league standings are based on points, with wins counting as three points and ties counting as one point. UOG has a five-point lead over its final opponent, the Crushers FC, which it will play on Sunday, April 14. Even if the Tritons lose their last match, they will take the championship by two points. There are no playoffs to the Amateur League this season.
The Tritons not only clinched the championship but won their 14th straight match since losing their opening game of the season last fanuchånan.
Ryoga Okada led the Tritons with three goals, which included the opening UOG score from a free kick only four minutes into the match. UOG would dominate the match, leading 4-0 at halftime and 7-2 at the game's end. Other Triton scorers, each with a single goal, included Ichiyo Kawamata, Ryo Suzuki, Hezekiah Crux, and Joseph Quan.
The Tritons are 14-1-0 on the season and have a final match left at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, against the Crushers FC in a make-up game that originally was supposed to be the opening match of the year.
The Lady Tritons will finish their season on April 14 as well with a 5:30 p.m. match against Venue Slay.
FC Beercelona fell to 6-8-1 on the season.
UOG then will play in the Challenge Cup after its final regular season match. The draw for the Cup will be at 7:15 p.m. next Saturday, April 13 at the GFA Lanai room on the GFA National Training Center.
