UOG Men's Basketball Team opens Triton League with victory over GCC
The University of Guam Men's Basketball Team opened the second season of the Triton Men's Basketball League with a 81-72 victory over Guam Community College on Jan. 28 at the UOG Calvo Field House.
The GCC squad outnumbered the Tritons 15 to eight, and GCC led the entire first half, but the Tritons -- with Logan Hopkins' 20 points in the first half -- kept it close and trailed 14-20 after the first quarter and 36-41 at half-time.
UOG picked up the pace on defense in the third quarter and took its first lead at 45-43 and led 57-56 at the end of the period. The Tritons dominated the fourth period, outscoring GCC by eight points in the period (24-16) to win the game 81-72.
Logan Hopkins led UOG with 24 points with Aljurrell Grape adding 19 points. Andrew Carlos scored 18 points, and Aaron Carlos closed out the double-digit scoring for the Tritons with 17.
The Alegre twins led GCC. Ethan was the high scorer in the game with 33 points, and Eric scored 14 points. No other GCC team member scored in double figures.
UOG is now 1-0 in the league while GCC is 0-1. UOG takes on MacTech on Thursday, Jan. 31, and GCC faces the Bulldogs.
In the opening game of the night, the Harper Valley Kennel Bulldogs defeated the MacTech Nerds 118-110 in a game that was not as close as the final score would indicate. The Bulldogs led the game by 20 to 30 points for most of the second half, but the Nerds made a big run at the end of the game.
Dez Fikes led all scorers with 39 points for the Nerds, while Christian (no last name placed in scoreboard) led the Bulldogs with 31 points.
The Triton Men's Basketball League plays again at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 30, in the UOG Calvo Field House with GCC playing the Harper Valley Kennel Bulldogs. At 8 p.m., the UOG Tritons take on the MacTech Nerds. Admission is free to all games.
