Tritons Men’s Basketball escapes GCC upset with fourth-quarter comeback
The University of Guam Men’s Basketball Team escaped an upset with a one-point win against Guam Community College in the Triton Men’s Basketball League on Feb. 6 in the UOG Calvo Field House.
The game was a battle in the first half with the score tied 21-21 at the end of the first period and GCC leading at halftime by two points with a score of 45-43.
GCC outscored the Tritons 28 to 16 in the third period with 14 points from Christian Chang and was up 73-59 going into the final 10 minutes of the game.
The Tritons came back twice in the fourth quarter from being down by 14 points. The UOG half-court press held GCC to 20 points in the fourth quarter while UOG put 35 points on the board. Tritons Aljarrell Grape scored 21 of those points. Logan Hopkins, after being held to three points in the first 30 minutes of the game, brought in 15 points in the fourth quarter.
Grape led UOG with 32 points for the game, while [position] Aaron Castro scored 19 points and Hopkins added 18 points. Chang led the scorers for GCC with 34 points, followed by Ethan Alegre with 19 points.
In the second game of the night, the Harper Valley Kennel Bulldogs edged the MacTech Nerds 114-110. MacTech led 31-30 after the first quarter, with the Bulldogs turning it around to 61-59 at halftime. MacTech pushed to a seven-point lead in the third period, 92-85, but the Bulldogs outscored MacTech 29-18 in the fourth quarter and won 114-110.
Daren Hechanova led the Bulldogs in scoring with 38 points while Chaz Barbour led MacTech with 30 points.
The Bulldogs now lead the Triton Men’s Basketball League by two games with a 4-0 record. UOG and MacTech are tied for second place with 2-2 records, and GCC is in fourth with a 0-4 record.
The teams return to the court at 6:15 p.m. on Feb. 7 as the UOG takes on MacTech, and GCC faces the Bulldogs the same night at 8 p.m.
