Student athletes honored at reception
The University of Guam Triton Athletics had its Student-Athlete Reception on May 28 in the UOG Calvo Field House to honor the student athletes for their hard work and success in the 2018-2019 academic year.
President Thomas W. Krise opened the reception followed by UOG Athletics Director Doug Palmer, who reported on the "State of the Varsity Athletics Program," which highlighted the successful 2018-2019 season that Triton Athletics had.
Palmer also introduced two new coaches for the 2019-2020 academic year: Cecile Olandez, who will start and coach the women's basketball program, and Gary Larkin, who will take over the highly successful women's soccer program next year following the split in the men's and women's head coaching duties.
UOG coaches Brent Tipton and Rod Hidalgo then presented the following awards:
Men's Basketball
Most Valuable Player: Logan Hopkins
Best Offense: Logan Hopkins
Best Defense: Aaron Castro
Sportsmanship: Victor Jones
Women's Soccer
Most Valuable Player: Ariya Cruz
Best Offense: Elisha Benavente
Best Defense: Koholali'i Maertens
Sportsmanship: Sopheary Soun
Men's Soccer
Most Valuable Player: Dylan Naputi
Best Offense: Ryoga Okada
Best Defense: Jordan Rosario, Kautong Omengkar
Sportsmanship: James Yang, Ichiyo Kawata
Student-Athlete of the Year: Logan Hopkins of the Men's Basketball Team
"Logan carried the Men's Basketball Team on his shoulders, averaging 34 points a game and scored both inside and out. He had a great year for the Tritons," Palmer said.
