It's summertime and school is out, but that hasn't stopped three schools from signing the “5-2-1-Almost None” pledge, a community pledge to promote a healthier school environment in partnership with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education (SNAP-Ed). SNAP-Ed is administered by the University of Guam’s Cooperative Extension & Outreach in collaboration with the Department of Public Health and Social Services.

The “5-2-1-Almost None” (521AN) campaign recommends eating five servings of fruits and vegetables, getting two hours or less of screen time, getting at least one hour of physical activity, and drinking almost no sugar-sweetened beverages per day.

Ordot Chalan-Pago Elementary School is renewing its pledge to extend the two-year SNAP-Ed partnership for another year, while Talofofo and Wettengel elementary schools have signed the 521AN pledge for the first time and will be working with UOG’s Cooperative Extension & Outreach to help students make healthy choices throughout the day.

The pledge is a year-long commitment of each school to promote the 521AN messages. 521AN will be shared on school newsletters, bulletin boards, physical activity game boards, and other educational materials for students, staff, and parents. Schools will champion 521AN healthy behaviors at school meetings/events and various physical activities, promoting “Smart Snacks” and role modeling the behaviors during the school day and at home.

Principals of the participating schools expressed the following:

“We have been working with the students to get them to bring healthier snacks and drinks to school. 521AN will help us spread the message to parents that they need to provide their children with healthy snacks and a healthier lifestyle.” — John Wesolowski, principal of Talofofo Elementary School

“Wettengel Elementary School is excited about the partnership with the 521AN SNAP-Ed Program that will help educate our community stakeholders develop smart habits of healthy eating and active living. It is our goal to get everyone at Wettengel to start thinking, living, and being healthy in and out of school. It's time to think smart and live life the smart way.” — Evangeline Iglesias, principal of Wettengel Elementary School

SNAP-Ed aims to meet island residents as much as possible where they live, learn, work, shop, and play, said Rynette Perez, SNAP-Ed assistant coordinator.

“Having new partners onboard with 5-2-1-Almost None will help create more opportunities for the community to make healthier food and physical activity choices,” she said. “We look forward to the new partnerships, as well as continuing the existing ones, that will benefit our youth and our island at large.”

SNAP-Ed anticipates a new pledge signing with Agana Heights Elementary School and renewing the pledge with Marcial Sablan Elementary School.
