New and improved edition of Guam’s original hiking book set to release April 12
For more than two decades, hikers have been guided through Guam’s most beautiful jungles,
mountains, waterfalls, and historic and cultural sites by “The Best Tracks on Guam”
by Dave and Bev Lotz. After selling out of several print runs of three editions of
the book over the years, the authors worked with the University of Guam Press to design
a new and improved fourth edition.
The edition, published by Taiguini Books, a division of UOG Press, will be released
at a launch party held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 12, at the newly opened
Asiga café behind Oka Pay-Less in Tamuning. The café shares the name of a hike in
Malojloj featured in the book.
The book is a resource for hikers, featuring detailed directions to and descriptions
of 44 hiking adventures, a thorough hike-safety guide, a plant guide, and hiking tips
informed by the authors’ nearly 50 years of experience hiking on Guam. The Lotzes
not only documented but trailblazed many of the hikes in the book, creating the seminal
hiking book on Guam that has informed other hiking texts both online and in print.
For this edition, they teamed up with adventure photographer and avid hiker Abby Crain
and search and rescue firefighter Jerred Wells to update photography and trail information
in the book.
This latest edition of the book is printed on durable, laminated pages and is spiral-bound
so that it can serve as a field guide while on hikes.
The book also offers details on how to prepare for hikes; health and safety information
including both preventative measures and field emergency responses; cultural, historical,
and environmental descriptions; and much more.
Starting April 12, the book will be available for purchase at the UOG Press website, the Triton Store, Bestseller bookstores in Micronesia Mall and Guam Premier Outlets, Blue Amber Trio, T. Stell Newman Visitor Center, the Guam Museum, and Faith Bookstore.
