In the News: Alumnus Jojo Peter passes away
The Honolulu Civil Beat reported on April 12 that University of Guam alumnus and immigrant rights activist Joakim "Jojo" Peter passed away on April 8 in Honolulu. Peter, a native of Chuuk, graduated from UOG in 1989 with a bachelor's in communication studies and went on to earn two master's degrees and a doctorate from the University of Hawaii.
Joakim “Jojo” Peter grew up on an island that was home to about 500 people and had no electricity, spending his childhood fishing with his grandfather and listening to stories about his family history.
Years later, Peter became an author and a champion for social justice in Honolulu whose influence spanned the Pacific Ocean.
Peter died Monday in Honolulu. He was 54.
