Club teams beat college teams in Triton Men's Basketball League
The University of Guam Men's Basketball Team and the Guam Community College MBB both lost to the club teams in the Triton Men's Basketball League on Feb. 2 at the UOG Calvo Field House.
In the first game of the afternoon, the Triton men's team opened the contest well, leading the Harper Valley Kennel Bulldogs 28-23 after the first quarter. Logan Hopkins scored 16 points in the first 10 minutes including four three-point shots. But Darren Hacharova for the Bulldogs scored 18 points in the second quarter and the HVK squad outscored the UOG team 37-15 in the quarter to take a 60-43 lead at halftime.
The Tritons held the Bulldogs somewhat close in the third period until the last two minutes when the Bulldogs went on a 10-0 run to end the quarter and put the game away with a 96-60 lead after three periods. The Bulldogs went on to defeat the Tritons 118-91.
UOG's Hopkins led all scorers with 41 points, hitting nine three-pointers. Aljurrell Grape followed for the Tritons with 17 points. JP Cruz was the leading scorer for the Bulldogs with 28 points, followed by Hecharova with 21 points.
Harper Valley Kennel now leads the Triton Men's Basketball League with a 3-0 record after the first half of the regular season. UOG is now 1-2 on the season and in third place.
In the second game of the day, the MacTech Nerds defeated Guam Community College 80-64.
GCC also led after the first quarter 19-16, but MacTech came back in the second period to lead 42-32 at halftime. MacTech maintained its 10-point lead in the third period and won by 16 points at the end.
Chaz Barber led the Nerds with 29 points while J. Williams scored 17 points. Ethan Alegre led GCC with 27 points.
MacTech is now 2-1 in the league while GCC fell to 0-3.
UOG and GCC meet at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6, while MacTech and the Bulldogs play at 8 p.m. that night in the UOG Calvo Field House. All games are free to watch.
