UOG men's basketball opens season with loss to break 30-game winning streak
The University of Guam Triton Men's Basketball team opened the 2018-19 season with a 101-75 loss to the Andersen Bombers at the Coral Reef Recreation Center on the Andersen Air Force Base. The loss ended the 30-game winning streak the Tritons started last year at Andersen Air Force Base, which ended up in a perfect 30-0 record for UOG during the 2017-18 academic year.
UOG had defeated the Bombers five times last fall and won the Bombers' Guam Basketball Challenge and the Tritons' Triton Basketball League with victories over the Bombers in the championship games of those leagues. Andersen was ready to change those results from last year.
The Bombers came out with a large roster of 6'4" and 6'5" players and jumped to an early lead on the Tritons as the game started. UOG still hung with the Bombers early as neither team came out shooting well and the Tritons got their share of rebounds in the first five minutes of the game, but slowly the Bombers size began to dominate the boards and they started to build their lead as the first quarter ended.
In the second quarter, the Tritons put on an effective full-court press that caused several Bomber turnovers, but UOG could not convert those turnovers into points and the Tritons committed just about as many fouls as the Bombers were committing turnovers, and the Bombers continued to build their lead from the foul line as the first half ended.
The Bombers led 57-29 at half and 84-45 at the end of the third quarter. UOG started to finally hit some three-pointers in the fourth quarter to close the gap a bit on the Bombers, but Andersen won by a comfortable 26 points in the end.
UOG will return to action next Saturday, Oct. 6, back at Andersen Air Force Base but are not sure of an opponent yet.
