The University of Guam presented two $1,000 scholarships on Oct. 28, 2018, to two UOG Triton soccer players in honor of the late James Whippy, the former UOG Men's soccer coach who won four Guam Football Association Championships in the early 1990s. Whippy was placed into the UOG Athletics Hall of Fame the same day in the UOG Calvo Field House as part of the Hall of Fame Reception and Basketball Game. The scholarships were given to the returning players with the highest GPAs on the UOG soccer teams.
The two soccer players to receive the scholarships were Koholali’i M. Maertens for the Triton Women's Soccer Team and Shashikant Kotwal for the Triton Men's Soccer Team. Both students have GPAs over 3.50. Rod Hidalgo, coach of UOG men's and women's soccer, made the announcement of the winners at the Hall of Fame Reception.

The Whippys started the scholarship fund in honor of Coach Whippy in the UOG Endowment Foundation when he passed away in July 2007.
