Local Ordot-Chalan Pago supermarket, Island Fresh, has recently signed a Community Pledge Certificate to assist in spreading the word about healthy eating and active living with the 5-2-1 Almost None campaign.

This campaign recommends eating 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, spending 2 hours or less of screen time, getting 1 hour of physical activity, and drinking almost no sugar-sweetened beverages, per day.

Island Fresh is the first store in Ordot-Chalan Pago to participate with 5-2-1 Almost None, under the University of Guam Extension & Outreach Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education (SNAP-Ed), in collaboration with the Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS).

Over the next 12 months, Island Fresh will be displaying 5-2-1 Almost None posters and banners, offering tastings of dishes made with healthy food choices, and promoting and identifying “Smart Snacks” with signage and displays. These activities are geared to help parents and students choose healthier options that meet USDA nutritional standards for school-aged children. This community partnership also entails regular cooking demonstrations and nutrition education sessions at the store, focusing on healthier versions of local recipes, as well as promoting locally grown, seasonal produce.

“SNAP-Ed is already in its second year partnering with Ordot-Chalan Pago Elementary School to promote the 5-2-1-Almost None campaign. Having Island Fresh as a partner in the same community helps to bring our campaign full circle so that the messages we are promoting at school and sending home will also be visible in other places in the community,” said UOG SNAP-Ed Assistant Coordinator Rynette D. Perez.

5-2-1 Almost None has a champion in the community with the support of Island Fresh. Ordot-Chalan Pago’s children and families will reap the benefits of healthy eating and active living.
