UOG Varsity Men’s Basketball Team Defeats GCC With Strong Second Half
The University of Guam Men’s Basketball Team used a strong second half to break open a close game against the Guam Community College
Basketball Team and send the Varsity Tritons against the Club Tritons in Guam Men’s
College Basketball League Championship on Saturday night at the UOG Calvo Field House
at 7:00 p.m.
GCC put in a great effort during the first half, being led by Brandon Duenas with
21 total points. The GCC squad led most of the first half but, UOG’s deeper bench
and persistent defense began to wear down GCC. The Tritons were able to take the lead
37-34 at half-time.
UOG opened up strong in the 2nd half, scoring the first 13 points of the half and
taking a 50 to 34 lead before GCC would score. The Varsity Tritons' full court press
forced several turnovers and never allowed GCC to get in an offensive rhythm in the
2nd half as UOG outscored GCC 48-19 in the final half and cruised to a 85-53 victory.
Ryan Nanguata scored 18 for the Tritons, while Raffy Sablan added 16 and Dez Fikes
10 points for UOG. Daniel Duenas scored 13 for GCC, and Lee Kaminaga 10.
The Varsity Tritons are now 7-0 in the league and face the UOG Men’s Basketball Club
on Saturday at 7:00pm in the UOG Calvo Field House for the GMCBL Championship. The
UOG Varsity is 2-0 versus the UOG Club this season. GCC finished 2-5 in the league
in their first season of competitive basketball.
The University of Guam Men’s Basketball Club Team also earned a championship bid with
a 65-59 win over Harvest Baptist Bible College on March 8 in the Guam Men’s College
Basketball League Semi-Finals at the UOG Calvo Field House.
