UOG Tritons Lose Opening Game 92-70 Against Phoenix Sons
The University of Guam Triton Men's Basketball Team lost their opening game of the
Fall 2016 Guam Basketball Association season to the Phoenix Sons 92-70.
The Tritons played well in the first quarter, trailing just 19-14 at the end of 1st
period, but the Sons got hot in the 2nd quarter, scoring 36 points. While UOG scored
a solid 28 points it was not enough to keep pace with the Phoenix shooting streak
as the Tritons trailed by 13 points at the half, 55-42.
The Tritons cut the lead down to just 10 twice in the third quarter, but the Sons
pushed their lead up to 19 points and were ahead 79-63 going into the 4th period.
The Sons were led by three 20-point scorers, Vince Estella with 23 points and 14 rebounds,
Sammy Setik with 22 points and 5 assists, and Mark Temerowski with 21 points and 10
rebounds. Guam's National Team Coach, EJ Calvo added 13 points.
A pair of freshmen led the way for the Tritons. Guard Karlo De Leon and forward Devin
San Agustin each scored 14 points and were the only Tritons to score in double figures.
Senior forward Mark Canovas grabbed 8 rebounds, and junior guard Andrew Carlos added
5 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals.
