UOG Theatre Presents Seasons of Love: A Musical Showcase
Compiling the best numbers from everyone’s favorite musicals, the UOG Theatre presents
its latest show, Seasons of Love—a Musical Showcase, through March 12 at the UOG Fine Arts Theater.
“It’s a musical review,” said UOG Alumna Joyce Torres who stars and emcees the show
alongside Alumnus Joseph Anderson. “It’s kind of a night celebrating Broadway’s best,
and the theme happens to be different seasons of love.”
UOG Assistant Professor of Theatre and Director Michelle Blas said the show is a
mash up of the classics, from Jersey Boys to West Side Story to Broadway classic Rent.
This is a relatively new and ambitious production, she said, which is why Blas tapped
on professors Dr. Colleen Jennings and Melissa Nay Ghandour to work with students
on their singing and dancing and professor Michael Slane to build sets to accommodate
the increased movement.
“We have duets, small ensemble numbers, large ensemble numbers, strictly dance numbers—there’s
going to be a nice mix of pieces,” she said. “Designing the show took a lot of time,
because we have a combination of music, theater, dance, students, and community members.”
Anderson said when asked to be a part of the show, he “jumped at the chance a little
too excitedly,” because of his background in theater and as a classical singer. While
marrying dance, acting, and song was challenging, Anderson said working with different
people with strengths in those areas made the rehearsals run smoother.
“It really is a lot of hard work,” he said. “During rehearsals, when we eventually finished our numbers, it was always good to see how we pulled it all together by working together.”
Torres said that this type of show really demonstrates what UOG and the island has to offer because it weaves together singing, acting, and dancing.
“It’s kind of like the merging of the arts,” she said.
The show runs from March 3 to 5 and March 10 to 12 at the UOG Theatre. Doors open
at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $10 general admission, $7.50
for youth and seniors, and free for UOG and Guam Community College students.
