UOG Sea Grant Releases Handbook for Natural Hazards

1/5/2018

Dr. Laura Biggs and the UOG Sea Grant team have put together Mariana Islands Homeowner’s Handbook to Prepare for Natural Hazards, a comprehensive book of how to get ready for coastal hazards that potentially could strike the island.

The book covers how to be informed, make a plan, build a kit, and get involved to protect your family and property. There are specific instructions on how to retrofit wood and tin structures for typhoon readiness, make a family communication plan, prepare your home for earthquakes, floods, typhoons and tsunami, how to work with FEMA, and much more.

“The checklists and tables in the back of the book will allow readers to quickly access important numbers and information for dealing with preparedness and recovery after a disaster has impacted the island,” said Biggs.

The book is free to residents and will be available for distribution at Home Depot and through Mayors Offices.  If school groups would like copies of the books, please contact Laura directly and she can provide books to the schools.
