The University of Guam community will celebrate an historic event at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 17, 2014 as the iconic UOG Field House will be renamed the University of Guam Calvo Field House. Through a committed donation of $3 million, the Calvo family is supporting the University’s 60th Anniversary Capital Campaign and UOG’s vision for a 21st Century campus.

Dr. Robert A. Underwood, UOG President; the UOG Board of Regents; the UOG Endowment Foundation Board of Directors; Industry Leaders; members from the business community; and the UOG community will be present at the ceremony as the Field House’s new name is revealed.

Jerry Calvo, a longtime supporter of the University and member of its Endowment Committee, said “The University of Guam is such an important part of our past, present, and future, not only in Guam but throughout Micronesia. We feel blessed and privileged to able to help the University with its fund-raising efforts and capital improvement campaign.”  Calvo further stated, “We are humbled and thankful that the University has decided to honor the memories of my father E.T. Calvo and my brother Eddie Calvo today. Dad and Eddie exemplified the principles of hard work and giving back to the community and I am sure they are very proud and happy today as is our entire family.”

The patriarch of the Calvo family, Eduardo Torres “Jake” Calvo, founded a number of extremely successful businesses that still prosper today. The Calvo family continues to help Guam flourish through their contributions to the business, civic and political sectors on Guam. Now, higher education can be added to that list as this donation acknowledges the Calvo family as a “21st-Century Visionary” in the Triton Developers program – a fundraising strategy designed to attract different levels of support spread over a certain period of time.

Triton Developers are instrumental in building a 21st Century University because of the high levels of sponsorship through Naming Opportunities, which provide recognition across UOG’s campus. The Calvo family’s generosity and support help the University to ensure another sixty years of growth and achievement.

Jesse Leon Guerrero, Chairman of the UOG Endowment Foundation Board of Directors, said “We are grateful for the generosity and commitment from the Calvo family. This gift highlights their pledge to the University of Guam community and the people of Guam. Their donation will go towards fulfilling the mission and vision of the University of Guam by providing a 21st Century campus for many generations to come.”

According to Dr. Underwood, “UOG is grateful to the Calvo family for their commitment. They are role models for community engagement and support for higher education.”
