UOG Relaunches Triton Athletics Program with Men’s Basketball
For the first time in over 15 years, the University of Guam Men’s Tritons Basketball Team will compete at the highest level on island, when they meet the Team Justice at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 2 at the UOG Calvo Field House during the inaugural game day of the newly formed Guam Basketball Association (GBA).
Organized by the Guam Basketball Confederation, the GBA is Guam’s official basketball men’s national league and is sanctioned by FIBA, the world governing body for basketball.
The game on Saturday will also mark the official relaunch of the University’s Triton
Athletics Program. “Men’s basketball is just the beginning,” said Randall Wiegand,
UOG Vice President of Administration and Finance. “In the fall and spring we hope
to begin programs in men's and women's soccer. After that, we are going to look
at women's basketball and volleyball.” UOG also has plans to develop athletic scholarships
for future Triton athletes.
The relaunch is part of the University's Good to Great initiative. “One of the goals of Good to Great is to enhance the student experience at UOG, and the Triton Athletics program provides another way that students can enrich their educational experience beyond the classroom.” said Dr. Robert Underwood, UOG President.
The head coach of the Spring 2016 Triton Men’s Basketball Team is Tony Thompson, and
below are the athletes on the final roster:
Admission to the game is free, and Big G t-shirts will be given to the first 200 UOG students, alumni or employees who attend the game. UOG will also be giving away an Apple Watch at halftime.
