UOG Regional Sustainability Conference April 15-16

The University of Guam Center for Island Sustainability (CIS) will host its 5^th Regional Conference on Island Sustainability on April 15 & 16, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency Guam.

The two-day conference’s theme is “Concept to Implementation:  Achieving a Sustainable Community.” Topics covered will include sustainable environments; climate change and energy; sustainable land use and regional management; technical innovations for sustainable production and consumption; leadership for sustainable development; entrepreneurial opportunities for sustainable solutions; and corporate social responsibility.

“There is a lot to offer at this year’s conference: an excellent line up of speakers, engaging workshops, and an exhibit filled with dedicated organizations and companies, and plenty of opportunities for networking,” said Dr. John Peterson, Assistant Vice President and UOG Center for Island Sustainability Director.

The keynote speaker for the conference is Ronald Jumeau, Seychelles Ambassador for Climate Change and Small Island Developing States issues. Jumeau started his career as a journalist and later became Chief Editor of the Seychelles Nation daily newspaper before he became Secretary to the Cabinet in the Office of the President of Seychelles and also served as Seychelles Minister for Environment and Natural Resources. In 2007, Jumeau was assigned to New York as the Seychelles Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Ambassador to the United States, Canada, Brazil, Cuba and several Caribbean islands until 2012 when he became a globe-trotting activist for the survival of his and other island nations.

“Ambassador Jumeau is a respected global leader. His work over the years has elevated the issues of the impacts to climate change on small developing islands at the international levels,” said Dr. Robert A. Underwood, UOG President.

Ronald Jumeau
Seychelles Ambassador for Climate Change and SIDS Issues

Ronald (Ronny) Jumeau has been the New York-based roving Ambassador for Climate Change and Small Island Developing State Issues of the Republic of Seychelles since 2012.He started his career as a journalist and then Chief Editor of the Seychelles Nation daily newspaper.  He became Secretary to the Cabinet in the Office of the President of Seychelles in 1992 before holding several ministerial posts from 1998 to 2007 including that of Minister for Environment and Natural Resources, which included responsibility for climate change, biodiversity and conservation, water, forestry, agriculture and fisheries. Amb. Jumeau was posted to New York in 2007 as Seychelles’ Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Ambassador to the United States, Canada, Brazil, Cuba and several Caribbean islands until 2012 when he became a globe-trotting activist for the survival of his and other island nations. He is also the lead spokesman for the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) and Chair of the Steering Committee of the Global Island Partnership GLISPA).
