University of Guam Associate Professor of Anthropology Dr. Doug Farrer was recently featured by Anthropology News for his article on Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and the Olympics.

Farrer’s article, titled The Olympic Future of Mixed Martial Arts, argues that MMA should be included as an official event in the Olympics. A photo showcasing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu on Guam at Spike22 MMA Gym taken by Farrer was also highlighted on the cover of the online and print journal.

Anthropology News also serves as the news outlet of the American Anthropological Association.

“The first Olympics started out with running, and no-holds-barred competitive fighting (pankration) was soon added,” Farrer said. “MMA fits the ancient ethos of the Olympics. The surprise of seeing my research photograph taken at Spike22 on the cover of Anthropology News shows that my current research is right on track, and I am pleased to work on Guam among some incredible modern day warriors.”
