UOG Names Tipton as Men’s Basketball Head Coach
The University of Guam has named Brent Tipton as its new Head Coach for Men’s Basketball
under the recently relaunched Triton Athletics program.
Last spring, Tipton served as the interim coach for a Triton Men's Basketball team
that returned to the court for the first time in 15 years competing in the FIBA-sanctioned
Guam Basketball Association last spring. The team, composed of all walk-on players,
finished with two wins and 10 losses.
“It’s an honor to continue working with the University of Guam’s athletes,” said
Tipton. “We will help our players develop their skills and approach to the game, as
they compete against some of the highest-level teams locally on Guam and against other
colleges and universities internationally.”
Tipton has extensive experience coaching basketball locally and internationally.
He is currently the head coach of the U18 Junior National Team and is the head coach
of the Southern High School boy’s basketball team. He served as either the head coach
or assistant coach in several of Guam’s gold-winning national teams:
Tipton earned a B.S. in Physical Education from Northland International University in Dunbar, Wisconsin in 2008, and holds a International Basketball Federation (FIBA) level one coaching certification. He is also a candidate in the FIBA Europe Coaching Certificate program and works with The Basketball Embassy, an international organization that helps to develop European national basketball programs through working with youth.
UOG Athletic Director Doug Palmer said hiring Tipton as the new head coach was the
natural next step as the Triton Athletics program continues to grow and develop.
“Coach Tipton brings a wealth of experience working with young people in the game
of basketball,” said Palmer. “We are excited to move this program forward for our
students and continue to compete with and against Guam’s best players.”
Tipton’s coaching staff will include Stephen Yates, head coach of Harvest Christian
Academy boy’s basketball team and Joshua Torres, head coach of Nothing but Net Guam.
