UOG Names Sablan as Head Women’s Volleyball Coach
The University of Guam has recently named Tatiana Afalava Sablan the new Head Coach
for Women’s Volleyball under the recently relaunched Triton Athletics program.
Sablan most recently served as the head girls’ volleyball coach at Southern High
School.
“I’m really excited to take up this new position, and I’m really hopeful to make
a positive impact with volleyball on Guam and at UOG,” she said.
Originally from Honolulu, Hawaii, Sablan has coached volleyball around the world.
In the past few years, she’s served as a youth coach at Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa,
head junior varsity coach at McKinley High School in Hawaii, and the girls’ head coach
for Club Makai Wahine under-17 team in Silver Springs, North Carolina.
Sablan also has a long history of playing volleyball, competing for Team Guam internationally
in Hong Kong, Cook Islands, Spain, and Papua New Guinea—ultimately winning a gold
medal in 2013 at the Olympic qualifier match in Sydney, Australia.
Sablan received an Associate’s Degree in Business Management from the University
of Maryland University College (UMUC) Asia, and holds a level one coaching certification
from the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB).
UOG Athletic Director Doug Palmer said with the hiring of Sablan, he’s confident the
UOG Triton Women's Volleyball program is off to a great start and sees great growth
and development in the future.
“We are very excited to offer women’s volleyball,” said Palmer. “We are planning
to host tournaments and leagues that will allow our Tritons to compete with some of
the best volleyball players on Guam and internationally.”
