UOG Comm Students Join Prestigious National Honors Society
Eight University of Guam students were recently inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, a branch of the National Communication Honors Society.
“It is an honor to be selected,” said junior Communication major Arnie Aban, who also now serves as vice president of Lamba Pi Eta. “I’m proud that I was able to meet the criteria. It’s a good feeling.”
Aban along with Quenie Balagot, Cherelle Daniel, Ashley Quintanilla, Mariah Ramos, Ariane Santos, Kyle Santos, and Michael Delfin were inducted into Lambda Pi Eta by Dr. Lilnabeth Somera, the chapter adviser.
“I think it’s a really good group of students,” Somera said. “We’re looking forward to what we can do next year and make it meaningful for the them. This encourages students to strive for academic excellence.”
To qualify for Lambda Pi Eta this spring, the students achieved a grade point average of 3.25 or higher in communication courses, a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher, and reached junior standing by the end of the fall 2014 semester.
Junior communication major Ariane Santos, who was also elected president of Lamba Pi Eta, said her membership can be an asset for her now and professionally in the future.
“It’s motivating me to keep my grades and GPA up so I can live up to being in the Honor Society and professionally just having the credentials to show future employers,” she said.
Aban said that becoming a member of Lamba Pi Eta gives him an opportunity to work on professional development and networking for the future.
“As in any club, the more you’re involved, the more opportunities to enhance your knowledge,” he said. “This is a core group of students that takes academics seriously, and that can be beneficial to all of us as we continue our degrees.”
The National Communication Honors Society has more than 400 active chapters at four-year universities throughout the world.
With a total of 11 members, Lamba Pi Eta can now increase efforts to promote academic achievement and outreach across campus, said Somera.
The Society’s goals include encouraging professional development among communication majors, educating students about graduate education in communication studies, and fostering scholastic achievement in communication.
