The University of Guam College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) will hold its 38th Annual Research Conference on Friday, March 10, 2017, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the History and Social Sciences (HSS) Building on the UOG campus.  The event is open to the public.

This year’s conference theme is Science & Art: Convergence in Oceania.  It will feature over 65 presentations representing a wide range of scholarly disciplines covering the arts, education, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.

Presenters will include local, regional, national and international scholars and artists.  

The conference’s keynote address is scheduled at 11:15 a.m. and will take place in the CLASS Lecture Hall.  The keynote speaker is Vicente (“Vince”) M. Diaz, Ph.D.  Diaz, a Filipino and Carolinian (Pohnpei) born and raised on Guam, is currently on the faculty of American Indian Studies and History at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.  Diaz attended UOG while playing football for the Tritons in the late 1970s.  

After schooling in Hawai’i and California, he returned to UOG to teach Pacific History and Micronesian Studies from 1991 to 2001.  Diaz then taught Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies at the University of Michigan and Comparative Native Studies at the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign before accepting his current position.  Diaz served as the Historian for the Hale’ta Our Roots textbooks produced by the Guam Political Status Education Coordinating Commission, and was instrumental in helping revive traditional seafaring in Guam.  He is also the author of Repositioning the Missionary: Rewriting the Histories of Colonialism, Native Catholicism, and Indigeneity in Guam (University of Hawaii, 2010) and the Writer/Director and Co-producer of Sacred Vessels: Navigating Tradition and Identity in Micronesia (29 mins, VHS 1997).
