UOG Attends Annual Association of American University Women’s (AAUW) Event

Representatives from the University of Guam recently attended the Annual Association of American University Women’s (AAUW) special dinner on Friday, March 28, 2014, at 6:00 p.m., at The View, Guam Marriott Resort and Spa.

Mr. John S. Cruickshank of the National Science Foundation was the keynote speaker.  He presentation was entitled “Advancing STEM in Education.”  Mr. Cruickshank is Senior Program Analyst in the Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings (DRL) and the Independent Research and Development (IR/D) Expert and Conflict of Interest Officer in the Office of the Assistant Director for the Directorate for Education and Human Resources at NSF. Cruickshank plans to return to Guam next year and deliver grant writing training for NSF grants at the University of Guam.

About the Keynote Speaker, John S. Cruickshank: 

At the National Science Foundation (NSF) John S. Cruickshank is the Senior Program Analyst in the Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings (DRL) and the Independent Research and Development (IR/D) Expert and Conflict of Interest (COI) Officer in the Office of the Assistant Director (OAD) for the Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR). John's responsibilities include program, policy, grant, and conflict management of educational research programs.

John coordinates Micronesia and South Pacific outreach in support of NSF's Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Initiative. His responsibilities include technical assistance, capacity building, and broadening participation in the U.S.-affiliated Pacific Islands: Guam; the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands; American Samoa; the Republic of the Marshall Islands; the Federated States of Micronesia; and the Republic of Palau. He has also advised Independent Samoa about international collaborations. In his outreach to Pacific Island countries and territories John has briefed high-level leaders including Heads of State, Governors, Ambassadors, and Ministers and has been interviewed many times on TV, in the newspapers, and on the radio.

John earned his B.A. Cum Laude in Political Science from the State University of New York at Purchase.  He completed additional graduate coursework in Political Science at Queens College, City University of New York.  

John has been with the Federal Government and NSF since 1986 and has received many awards and honors. Since 2012 he serves as the NSF member to the Interagency Group on Insular Areas (IGIA) co-chaired by the White House and the Secretary of the Interior. In 2012 he delivered the Commencement Address at Guam Community College. In 2011 he was the recipient of the NSF Director's Award for Superior Accomplishment for his innovative outreach model to the U.S.-affiliated Pacific Islands Region. In 2009 the Guam Legislature awarded him a Resolution for his Federal advocacy of Guam and Micronesia.
