New alumnus John Ruane successfully passed the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam and became certified by the Project Management Institute (PMI) in December of last year. Ruane, who earned his B.S. in Criminal Justice last year as well, says the program will build upon and enhance the management training he received as a technician and team member in aircraft maintenance from his previous career in the United States Air Force. “The methods used by a PMP, especially in creating project plans, will help ensure no details are overlooked. And promote team buy-in,” he says.
 
Government, commercial and other organizations employ PMP certified project managers in an attempt to improve the success rate of projects in all areas of knowledge, by applying a standardized and evolving set of project management principles. On Guam, including Ruane, there are only eight PMP certified project managers.
 
Ruane is currently a graduate student in the Masters of Public Administration program. “I will use the skills of project management in the course of my studies. It is ideal training material for a professional. I am grateful for the School of Business and Public Administration providing the course BA441 to meet the education requirement to take the PMP exam, and the help I received in obtaining certification while earning my bachelor’s degree,” he explains.  Ruane is the first student who took BA441, Operations and Project Management, at UOG and successfully passed the PMP exam.
 
Years ago, the proud Triton first visited Guam as a service member in the U.S. Air Force. Then in 2007, his family decided to relocate to the island. Eventually, Ruane crossed paths with Dr. Ron McNinch, Associate Professor, Public Administration at several University functions. “Dr. McNinch advised me on the requirements for obtaining a degree in Criminal Justice. I had attained 44 credit hours through the Community College of the Air Force.  Many of these credits were applicable to the Criminal Justice Program,” he says.
 
Ruane enrolled in classes in 2009 part time, and participated in other studies related to Criminal Justice such as National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification, and joining Guam Police department patrols with the ride-along program. He became a Certified Fraud Examiner in 2010, passing the exam administered by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.
 
Ruane had a rich student experience and was an active participant in various events throughout 2013. He was a presenter on public relations at the “2013 International Conference on Business, Economics and Information Technology” in Cairns, Australia in March. He was inducted into the Alpha Phi Sigma National Criminal Justice Honor Society in May.  And, he was Chairman of the Planning Committee for the PA 304 Forum on Human Trafficking in May as well.
 
His favorite Triton moment was when he attended the “SBPA Dean’s Hotdog Day and bonfire” in September 2012. It was held in conjunction with UOG’s campus-wide 60 th anniversary celebration. “Nearly all the students and faculty turned out for good food, music and fun,” he says.
 
Ruane’s message to his fellow Tritons is to work with a good study group to learn from each other and maximize the learning experience from your courses.
 
In his spare time, he likes to walk his dogs, enjoy the Guam sunsets, and barbeque on the front porch.
