Students Inducted Into Prestigious Communication Honors Society
Seven students were inducted into the University of Guam’s Lambda Pi Eta chapter
of the National Communication Honors Society.
“It feels amazing—like your hard work paid off,” said junior Yvonne Manglona.
Manglona along with Kreeshia Aquino, Eric Bacarella, Swetha Kotwal, John Mugol, Erica
Pangelinan, and Rianne Peredo were inducted by Dr. Lilnabeth Somera, the chapter adviser.
Manglona, who’s majoring in Communication with emphases in mass media, journalism, public relations and minoring in writing, said it was Somera who encouraged and motivated her to strive for this achievement.
“It feels good to have a professor encourage you,” Manglona said. “You feel like professors really do care about your success and academic achievements.”
Bacarella, a junior double majoring in communications and philosophy, said unlike
colleges in the states, UOG provides the type of environment that allows him to focus
and achieve academic goals such as this.
“The style of college at UOG…there’s not as many distractions,” he said. “It gives
me a lot of time to focus on school.”
To qualify for Lambda Pi Eta this fall, each student achieved a grade point average
of 3.25 or higher in communication courses, a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher, and
reached junior standing by the end of the spring 2015 semester.
The National Communication Honors Society has more than 400 active chapters at four-year universities throughout the world.
The Society’s goals include encouraging professional development among communication
majors, educating students about graduate education in communication studies, and
fostering scholastic achievement in communication.
