Two outstanding School of Education (SOE) Spring 2016 undergraduates demonstrated consistent high achievement by ranking within the top 20 percent of the nation on both the Core Praxis and Praxis II exams.

The Core Praxis—broken up into reading, writing and math—is a series of exams students must take before entering the School of Education. The Praxis II—broken up into specialized content and principles of learning and teaching—are a series of exams students must take after being accepted into SOE but before student teaching commences.

Shannel Leon Guerrero and Ann Mariel Flores scored within the top 15 percent of the nation in the writing section of the Core Praxis while Leon Guerrero also scored within the top 15 percent on the math section of the Core Praxis.

Both students also scored within the top 20 percent in the nation in the specialized content of the Praxis II exam. Leon Guerrero scored within the top 10 percent in the nation on the Principles of Learning and Teaching section of the Praxis II exam as well.

“I am so impressed with the quality of our teacher candidates,” said School of Education Dean Dr. John Sanchez. “Scoring within the top 20 percent in the nation reassures the public that UOG is recruiting and producing the best and brightest into the teaching profession. They will become teachers with high expectations of their own students once they enter the K-12 school system.”

Five other students also scored within the top 20 percent in the nation on both the principles of learning and teaching and the specialized content sections of the Praxis II exam.

This year, there were 29 local undergraduate students and 18 graduate students who earned degrees from the UOG School of Education. Ten undergraduate students enrolled in the College of Micronesia-Federated States of Micronesia BAE Partnership Program and Individualized Degree Plan also graduated this semester.
