UOG Professor Dr. Yukiko Inoue-Smith’s new book, Was It All a Dream?: Days Spent Embracing Tanka on a Western Pacific Island (with a commentary by Kyle Smith) has recently been published by Union Press. Tanka is Japan’s oldest and most esteemed poetry genre. Inoue-Smith is a professor of educational psychology, and she considers poetry an equally important element of her life’s work. The book's opening tanka, which appears below, expresses in its first lines one of the book's themes.

that I lived
at the risk of my life
might be all a dream
you won’t look at me
in the coffin, will you?
