UOG Fosters Guam GENE-iuses
The University of Guam College of Natural & Applied Sciences (CNAS), in collaboration
with the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s College of Tropical Agriculture & Human Resources’
GENE-ius Day Program, held a two-day children’s science trial program called, “Guam
Gene-ius.”
Fifty-two students ages 8 to 12 participated in activities that helped foster critical
thinking and problem-solving skills while building an overall passion for science.
Students explored the parts and functions of cells and their organelles by creating
their own microscope slide and operating a compound microscope. They better understood
the concept of diffusion through gummy bears. Students also built a life size model
of an animal cell.
Kamille Wang with the Guam GENE-ius program, said while no additional trial-runs are
scheduled, CNAS is in the process of opening a full program soon.
For more information on the Guam Gene-ius Program, contact the College of Natural
and Applied Science at guam-geneius@triton.uog.edu.
Guam GENE-ius helpers pose with student participants during one if the trial-run days
of the program. In total, 52 students visted the UOG campus to foster critical thinking
and problem-solving skills while building an overall passion for science through the
program.
