UOG Dean Sellman Discusses Relationship Between Meditation and Empathy in Recent Publication

2/6/2018
University of GuamDr. James Sellman, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, recently published a paper describing how Daoist meditation practices help people achieve empathy and understanding of others.

The piece, titled Field, focus and focused-field: a classical Daoist world view and physiology, was published in the International Communication of Chinese Culture (ICCC). The ICCC is a cross-disciplinary journal focused on the areas of China Studies, Communication, and Cultural Studies.

Sellman argues that certain means of meditation particular to Daoists help transform their world view “by freeing themselves from their limited, situational perspectives to embrace a correlative, bi-modal, or non-dual understanding.”
