The University of Guam Men's Basketball defeated the Phoenix on Saturday at the Tiyan High School Gym 77-61 for their first
GBA victory of the season and their first win in the league in almost a year. The
victory broke a 15 game losing streak over 2 GBA seasons.
The Tritons played well in the first quarter, matching the Phoenix SOns basket for
basket as the teams were tied at the end of the first quarter, 19-19. UOG picked up
the pace in the 2nd quarter, pushing a small lead up to 15 points at one point in
the quarter and then finishing the half up 42-29.
At the end the third quarter UOG was up 57-39 with 10 minutes to go.
The Tritons hit the first basket of 4th period to go up by 20 points 59-39, but then
the Phoenix Sons made a run and cut the lead to 8 points before the Tritons stopped
the bleeding and recovered on offense to win the game 77-61.
UOG had a balanced scoring attack with Ryan Nangauta leading the way with 17 points
and 10 rebounds. AJ Carlos added 14 points. Elias David and Dez Fikes scored 12 each
and pulled down 11 and 14 rebounds respectively for the Tritons. Romeo Sanchez scored
13 to lead the Phoenix Sons.
UOG outrebounded the bigger Phoenix Sons 71 to 49 and outscored them 46-28 in the
paint. The Tritons led almost 38 minutes of the 40 minute game.
UOG is now 1-4 in the GBA Season 3 and play again Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. against the Outlanders.
