The University of Guam’s Anthropology Department and Sea Grant will be implementing a Maritime Archaeology Field Schoolin Guam from July 3 to August 5, 2017.

We are seeking Expressions of Interest from Guam residents, UOG and College of Micronesia students, and Freely Associated States’ residents to participate in the field school.

The aims of the field school are to:
•    Record and document a number of underwater cultural heritage sites in Guam using multi-disciplinary methods and through the implementation of the Nautical Archaeology Society’s (NAS) training program
•    Involve specialists to instruct in photogrammetry, corrosion investigations, and ecological studies
•    Compile documentation of the sites and activities to assist in compilation of an Action Plan for developing maritime archaeology in Guam and the region
•    A one-day seminar on the value of, and methods for preserving World War II underwater cultural heritage sites will be held during this period.
University of Guam
Students can enroll in the course AN 462 Advanced Field Methods Archaeology and gain 6 credit hours after successfully completing the course. In addition, students and non-students participating in the field school will gain an internationally recognized certification from the United Kingdom’s Nautical Archaeology Society. 

All participants must hold and show proof of the following:

  • a medical certificate stating they are ‘fit to dive'
  • an Open Water Diving Certificate with a minimum of 15 dives, 5 in the last 3 months
  • and diving insurance such as from the Diver Alert Network (DAN)
