Early Goals Doom UOG Men's Soccer vs NAPA Rovers
The University of Guam Men's Soccer Team gave up two goals in the first 5 minutes of the match as the NAPA Rovers beat the
Tritons 2-1 on Friday night at the Guam Football Association National Training Center
in the biggest GFA Men's League (Division II) match of the season.
Coming into the match, the Rovers were in first place with 40 points, while the Tritons
were in 2nd place with 39 points.
UOG did not have starting goal keeper Mike Topasna available for the match due to
personal reasons, and the Rovers took advantage early with a set shot from 20 yards
out and then a hard shot from just inside the box.
The Triton defense settled down after that point, not giving up another goal. The
UOG offense did come alive with about 15 minutes left in the first half, as Jacques
Diambra took a hard shot at goal that the Rover goal keeper could not handle. Rafael
Sablan put in the loose ball for the UOG score.
The Tritons were down 2-1 at half-time, and the score remained the same for the 2nd
half. Both teams made defensive saves on hard shots during the 2nd half, and for the
last 5 minutes of the match, UOG dominated the ball in Rover territory. But shots
were high or wide or the Rover goalkeeper made good stops on hard shots, and the Rover
defense would kick the ball out of the box area as the Triton pressure could not tie
the match.
UOG is now 13-6-0 for season and have lost their last two matches. The Tritons face
Crushes FC in their final GFA Men's League (Division II) match of the season on April
21 at 7:00 p.m. The Tritons will play in the GFA Cup on May 4, at 9:00 p.m. against
the winner of the Pago Bay Disasters and Hyundai Family FC.
