The Guam 4-H Youth Development Program facilitates the chartering of school and community clubs throughout the island.
Club meetings are learning “laboratories” where members develop social skills including communicating and working with others. Members also have opportunities to practice leadership skills, develop strong character, and become responsible citizens by participating in community service activities. Club meetings are a wonderful way for youth to become exposed to new and exciting experiences and activities in a safe and familiar environment.
What's required to form a 4-H Club?
- At least five youth members, ages 5-18, with the club roster submitted to the 4-H office.
- At least two trained adult volunteer leaders/advisors supported by a 4-H mentor. The volunteers must also attend trainings hosted by 4-H mentors.
- An annual calendar of activities/events.
- Opportunities for youth to learn important life skills like leadership (through electing club officers) and citizenship (through community service projects).
- A safe environment for the club to meet.
- Attendance at 4-H Club Symposiums
- Attendance of the officers and advisors to the 4-H banquet.
- Responsibility for the club's own finances.
- Annual charter application renewal.
Things to consider before starting a club:
- What is the need for a club in your community/village/school? How can a club help that need?
- Will the club be a general community club, with no specific project focus, or a project-based club with a specific project focus (i.e. the Marine Mania Club)?
- How many meetings do you plan to host per month/year? When will they be held?
- Where will your club meet? Will it be the same place every time, or will you rotate meeting venues?
- Are there parents or adults willing to assist with your club as needed?
