Creative Hands Pacific

 

This biennial exhibition was the ninth in a series of jurored exhibits since 1992 sponsored by the Isla Center for the Arts. 

The juror for this year’s exhibition is Sara Frankel.  Ms. Frankel holds a M.F.A. degree in painting from Yale University and a B.F.A. degree in drawing from the University of Iowa.  As an artist herself, she has showcased her work in a number of solo and group exhibitions.  She has won numerous awards, including the National Endowment for the Arts, Individual Fellowship in 1991 and the Massachusetts Foundation for the Arts Grant in 1984.  She has also appeared as a guest lecturer at colleges across the United States.  She is currently teaching drawing as an Assistant Professor at the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC.

This year, the Isla Center for the Arts received one hundred and two (102) submissions from 17 artists who live in the Micronesian region.  Ms. Frankel selected thirty-five (35) works for the exhibition.

The exhibition consisted of a variety of media including watercolor and acrylic paintings, photographs, pastels, glass, ceramics, and textiles.

The artists selected for this exhibition were: Monica Baza, Elizabeth Beattie, Suzanne Bell, Michael Bevacqua, John Dierking, Elizabeth Gayle, Alana Kerr, Mark Murer, Richard Olmo, Robin Olmo, Viktoria Sayrs, Boi Sibug, Carol Simpson-Warner, Jay Sullivan, Zelma Summers, Kie Susuico, and Bruce Warner.

This exhibit is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, University of Guam, Guam CAHA, NEA and the Office of the Governor.
